It is a last stop for those from all around the world looking to experience 4 seasons in immaculate mountain surroundings. Apart from an active lifestyle, Flagstaff inhabitants and visitors enjoy a lot of local restaurants, shops and craft breweries, a flourishing art community, and a historic downtown area.
The area of what is current day Flagstaff used to be along an old wagon trail to California. In 1876 a group of explorers to the area peeled a tall western yellow pine of its bark for creating a flagpole to commemorate the United States Centennial. This flagpole stayed a landmark in the area for years and lends its name to the colony when the Pacific and Atlantic Railroad came about in 1882. The early economy was dependent on the rail lines, lumber and ranching trades.
